An Excerpt From Teletrade Notes by Brad Johnson
by Melissa on Wednesday, December 01, 1999

The field of Numismatics has grown ten-fold in the past 20 years as many more people gained interest in coins because of the attention that gold received in 1980. During the 1960Æs and early 1970Æs it was possible to buy gem Morgan Dollars for two or three times face value and St Gaudens were around $50 per coin. In January 1980 St Gaudens were trading for as much as $1,000 per coin in nice AU/Unc condition and common date gems were trading for as much as $3,000. Of course gold peaked in January 1980 at $850 per ounce. As the hobby grew in the numbers of participants, it expanded old territories and created new ones. These new ôspecialtyö territories include VAMÆS, FS #Æs, Breen #Æs, Overton #Æs, error collecting, misplaced dates, Snow #Æs, Pattern collecting, repunched mint marks, and doubled dies just to name a few.

Brad Johnson, our Senior Numismatist and VP, writes a column in each weeks printed auction catalog which provides valuable and interesting numismatic information. If there is a topic that you would like to see covered, please feel free to send Brad an E-mail at bradj@teletrade.com

Continuing to Serve Your NeedsàSome Important Changes
by Melissa on Tuesday, October 05, 1999

Our goal here at Teletrade is to offer our customers the highest quality sports cards available in the marketplace today. Over the next month, we will be making several changes to our auctions in order to move forward towards this goal. The most significant change will regard the content and frequency of our auctions. We will hold both certified and regular card auctions, as we have done in the past, but now auctions will be solely comprised of sports cards. The certified card auctions will have material graded by PSA and SGC and will take place every other Thursday. A full listing for the certified auctions will be available in our full-page ads in SCD (Sports Collectors Digest) and over the internet. The regular card auctions will contain both certified and raw cards and will take place every Tuesday and will be available over the internet. Additionally, we will no longer be issuing print catalogs for sports auctions. As always, bidding will be available through the Internet or by touch-tone phone via our toll free bidder hotline. A printable version of the auction catalog is available online for those who prefer telephone bidding. It is easily accessible and of minimum length to ensure quick printing. This printable catalog contains all of the information you need to participate via telephone. If you have any comments or suggestions for improving our service, send us an E-mail at cust@teletrade.com

GMAI Signs "Perfect Game" Memorabilia Deal with David Cone and Andrew Levy
by Melissa on Tuesday, August 24, 1999

Andrew Levy, Chief Executive Officer of Wish You Were Here Productions and representative for Yankee pitcher, David Cone, has chosen Teletrade's parent company, GMAI, to market "Perfect Game" memorabilia on behalf of Cone, who this year became the 16th major league baseball player in history to pitch a perfect game. The agreement with Mr. Levy allows Greg Manning Sports an exclusive period to market "Perfect Game" autographed memorabilia by Cone, which will include baseballs, photographs, bats, gloves, jerseys and periodicals. Levy was offered several dozen proposals to market Perfect Game memorabilia and decided to partner with GMAI because of their straightforward no-nonsense approach, excellent reputation, and in-house marketing capabilities. GMAI will offer a notarized certificate of authenticity with each item, noting it is from the original David Cone "Perfect Game" signing. Marketing plans include a special Internet site, www.perfect-game.com, and an extensive print media campaign. A portion of all proceeds from the sale of memorabilia will be donated to the David Cone Foundation, which offers support to a number of primarily child-related charities.

by Melissa on Tuesday, July 13, 1999

One of the benefits of Teletrade as compared to other online auctions, is that we offer bidding from our web site as well as over our toll free 800 lines.á We have recently added more lines for phone bidding and customers rarely experience a problem getting through to the auction as the auction approaches its close.á If you experience an unanticipated problem with your operating system or our web site, you may bid by phone by calling our toll free bidding line at 800-332-5040. Detailed phone bidding instructions are available at our web site under "Bidding Info" and in our weekly printed auction catalogs. Due to the unpredictability of the Internet, a problem with connecting to our site is bound to occur from time to time.á By allowing participants to bid by phone, our auctions are always accessible and will never be completely shut down.áá

áááááááNext week we have several very rare coins in our three auctions.á The first is the infamous Continental Dollar from 1776,á our first dollar sized coin ever minted in the US.á This coin is lot 1000 in Auction 1180 and grades AU-53 by PCGS.á It has full Currency spelled and no designers initial, EG for Elisha Galaudet.á Besides the front cover, an image of this coin can be seen at our web site.á áááááááThe second coin is a 1798/7 $10 gold piece graded AU-53 by PCGS.á This rare coin has 9 stars to the left and 4 stars to the right. This coin has very slight wear,á attractive surfaces, good color, and a bit of luster.á áááááááThe third coin is the rare "Jefferson" Cent, minted in 1795. This coin was designed and minted by John Harper at is own expense during a time when the mint was under attack and private mints were being considered for contracting out coin minting.á Although this coin has a few small problems,á it rarity and historical significance make this oneá of the rarest coins we have handled recently.á áááááááWe also received a large collection of Pattern coins this week that can be found split between all three auctions.á There are several that have less than 10 pieces known to exist.á

Brad Johnson Announces Changes in Coin Description Criteria
by Melissa on Thursday, June 10, 1999

The number one criteria used by Teletrade when describing coins for auction is the overall eye appeal. Under this broad statement, the following are taken into consideration: toning, strike, and luster. There are several questions that come to mind when writing a coin description. Are the surfaces flashy, average, or dull? If the coin is not toned, is the toning partial or complete? What colors are visible and are they attractive? Is the strike strong, average, soft, or weak? The second area used in descriptive writing is technical grading. Are there excessive bagmarks for the grade, and where are they located? Teletrade has also found that the average participant has a strong grasp of grading and prefers not to have damage described that isconsistent with the grade given. In the future, there will be no comment made about marks on a coin that is average for the grade, unless the damage is in an obvious place like the cheek. There will be comments on the color, strike, and luster, and any unusual features. If no comment is made on a coin, it can be perceived as being average and normal for the number of marks for its given grade. If you have any questions regarding coin descriptions, you may contact Brad Johnson by E-mail at bradj@teletrade.com

An Excerpt from Teletrade Notes by Brad Johnson
by Melissa on Monday, May 24, 1999

One of the mystics of coin collecting has and always will be early Copper. Copper collectors are extremely picky and very knowledgeable about not only grading and pricing, but also the history involved. Because of the lack of coinage supplied by the English, hard working enterprising Americans took the initiative and minted coins and tokens privately. The Colonies still accepted coinage from Europe, the Spanish Real was accepted well into the 19th Century. The Real was worth 12 1/2 cents and was known as a "bit". As many of you remember from old Western movies "two bits" is worth a quarter. George Washington developed the Federal Banking system with the positive advice from Alexander Hamilton. Thomas Jefferson was against the idea of a banking system outside of each individual state. Unfortunately the states were finding it harder and harder to come up with a legitimate money system for interstate trading. This was the beginning of the federal mint and standardized currency. We have many superb Copper pieces from Colonial to Lincoln cents coming up in Auction 1169, 1170, and 1171.

ICG Certified Coins Now Accepted by Teletrade
by Melissa on Wednesday, March 24, 1999

On March 17, Julie Abrams, President of Teletrade, and Keith Love, President of ICG (Independent Coin Grading), jointly announced that we are now accepting ICG graded coins for our auctions. ICG has received strong support from both the dealer and collector communities. The reputation and expertise of the ICG graders is quickly leading to wide acceptance of the ICG product in the marketplace and we foresee ICG playing a major role in the coin industry in years to come. ICG is located in Englewood,Colorado and was established by two former coin graders and coin dealers and two former directors at the American Numismatic Association (ANA). After just three months of grading coins, ICG has gained the attention of the numismatic community with the quality of its grading, the price dealers and collectors are getting for ICG graded coins, its incredible turnaround times, and the quality of its customer service. Teletrade and ICG also offer a grading/auction program. Raw coins can graded at a reduced rate if designated for auction by Teletrade. For more information on this program, click on the button from the coin home page for "Selling Info".

400 Coin Images Per Week - Coming Soon!
by Melissa on Thursday, March 18, 1999

We are pleased to announce that we will be increasing the number of coin images available each week to 200 images per auction. We have received very positive feedback regarding our images and a heavy demand for an increase in the number and variety of images offered each week. We would of course love to provide more information about the lots including images of every lot, however, there is simply not enough time for the creation of 2,800 images each week of the quality we want to provide. So, we do what we can and we will continually strive to do more!

The Vermont is attractive with a bit of light gold, the Missouri has attractive gold toning, and the Stone Mountain is flashy. This set has every type of Commemorative minted. A type set means every different series minted has at least one representative. An example would be the 1936-S Rhode Island in this set, although there are two mintmarks only the S mint is represented here. The entireset is well matched and attractive. There are no hideous marks, scratches, or bad color in the entire set. This would be an excellent way to achieve a quality set at a reasonable price. It is lot 1711 in Auction 1142
