by Dennis on Monday, December 15, 2003  In the December 14, 2003 Teletrade« Premier Plus Auction, an 1884-S NGC MS65 Silver Dollar was auctioned to the highest bidder for $116,600 to a private client, amid spirited bidding on www.teletrade.com. This coin is the first coin to realize in excess of $100,000 at Teletrade« and therefore is an auction record for the firm.
Mintage was a relatively high 3.2 million pieces. Apparently the entire mintage circulated extensively, given the abundant presence of circulated example today. Most silver dollar authorities are of the opinion that the reported few bags dispersed piecemeal by the Treasury were predominantly AU grade examples, not technically Mint State coins.p>
The offered coin was the lone example assigned this lofty classification by prestigious NGC; none finer. PCGS has certified just one at this level, and two finer.
